One of those decisions is where to place the incisions during the breast augmentation procedure. There are three primary incision sites used in breast enlargement:

• Periareolar Incision —The periareolar incision is placed around the edges of the breast’s areola.
• Inframammary Incision— This type of incision is placed in the crease directly below each breast.
• Transaxillary Incision— This is an incision in the armpit area.

 

Dr. Peña most often recommends the periareolar incision because it allows easy access to the internal breast and results in a very discreet scar. The incision site that is best for you will depend on your unique circumstances. The type of implants you choose, your current breast condition and your desired results are just a few of the factors that will go into choosing the incision site. Remember that different plastic surgeons may have their personal preferences regarding the incision, but, ultimately, it is up to you to choose the incision type.
