Breast Implant Placement

There are two types of breast implant placement options that should be considered after deciding breast augmentation is right for you. There is the submuscular option, which indicates placement below the chest muscle, or subglandular, which refers to placement above the chest (pectoral) muscle.

 

Dr. Peña rarely performs the subglandular implant placement. He will explain why the submuscular implant placement used at our plastic surgery center is the preferred method.

 

What is the difference?

 

Deciding whether or not to place the implant over or under the muscle will affect the end result. During your personal consultation with Dr. Peña, you will have the opportunity to compare breast augmentation before and after photos to see how appearances vary.

 

Submuscular implants tend to integrate better due to their less distinct edges and are the placement of choice for many of the country’s cosmetic surgeons. Under-the-muscle implants are believed to cause fewer challenges during mammogram testing. And many surgeons and patients simply feel the results are more natural-looking with submuscular placement.

 

One more reason it is the placement of choice is that submuscular placement has been suggested to be less prone to capsular contracture, or hardening, a potential side effect of surgery. Remember, factors like implant size and shape can have an impact on the end result.

 

The majority of breast augmentation surgeries here at our Naples plastic surgery center are done using the submuscular placement technique, but Dr. Peña will recommend the one that’s right for you based on your individual needs.
