Types of Breast Implants

Choosing a breast implant type can be a challenging decision, but with the proper guidance and comprehensive information, the choice becomes easier. Dr. Peña and his Naples breast surgery team are here to walk you through the decision-making process to help you find a solution you can be happy with.

 

Breast implants are made up of two components, the outer shell and the filling material. There are two main types of implants based on filler material: saline and silicone. Both types are FDA-approved and adhere to high safety standards.

 

Implant Types

 

Saline Breast Implants

– The outer silicone sac (implant shell) is filled with a saltwater solution. Saline are filled during surgery for flexibility.

 

Silicone Breast Implants

– The outer silicone sac is filled with a silicone gel. Silicone implants are only available as pre-filled sacs. In general, Dr. Peña prefers to use silicone implants as they tend to feel more natural.

 

Gummy Bear Implants–A new type of implant is called a “gummy bear” implant. This silicone gel sac uses a cohesive gel filling that reduces the chances of wrinkling and dimpling. These are currently awaiting FDA approval.

 

Choosing a Size

 

You may already have an idea of the cup size you want, or Dr. Peña can recommend a specific size after a thorough examination. After seeing the difference in various cup sizes and viewing our before and after photos, choosing your ideal size becomes easier.

 

The Right Type of Implant

 

There are also various shapes to consider: round versus teardrop-shaped, smooth versus textured. The shape of implant you want depends on your ultimate aesthetic goal. When discussing this with Dr. Peña, it is important that you be honest with him, so he can help you choose the implant type that will give you your desired results.

While risks of both include rupture, leaking and capsular contracture, the incidence rate is very low. Dr. Peña will go over the risks and benefits of each type during your consultation.
