FDA Reaffirms silicone breast implant safety

In recent meetings with the FDA the representatives of the Breast implant manufacturers (Innamed and Mentor) reaffirmed what the FDA knew : that silicone breast implants did not pose a health threat to consumers. They also discussed the FDA "requirement" that patients get and MRI at 3 years after implantation with silicone implants. This they felt was an unreasonable financial burden on patients without real evidence suggesting a benefit. In fact it may be "over-read" nad cause unnecessary reoperations.

I too do not agree with this recommendation for my patients. Routine mammograms followed by an MRI in 6 to 10 years would have more scientific merit.
