Adult acne is real. More than that, it’s embarrassing. While breakouts on the face, neck, chest and back can be unsightly during adolescence and the early to mid-20s, once you reach a certain age, frustratingly persistent acne can become something else entirely – it can become humiliating.
With the hot and humid summer months already upon us, adults with acne may experience more frequent breakouts. Here are four steps you can take to minimize these breakouts and help keep your skin looking fresh, clean, and healthy:
- Was your face twice daily. Use a gentle cleanser and warm water both morning and night to clean away any dirt, sweat, and grime. Try using a baby washcloth to remove cleaners from the face, they are gentler and less likely to irritate the skin
- Consider retinoid face creams and lotions. Face creams with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide may be useful as well. Use these sparingly and be wary of over drying, which can cause additional breakouts. Also be sure to use a facial sunscreen when going outside
- Use only noncomedogenic cosmetics and lotions, and remove daily moisturizers by washing the face before bed
- Visit La Piel Spa, our Naples medical spa, to learn about nonsurgical adult acne solutions such as PLP, chemical peels, and professional skin care treatments
Adult acne does not always respond well to over-the-counter and at-home solutions. If it did, you probably wouldn’t be dealing with the issue in the first place. If your acne has proven difficult or impossible to treat, please contact Dr. Manuel Peña online or by calling 239-348-7362 to schedule a consultation and learn more about your options. We welcome men and women from Naples, Ft. Myers, Estero, and all surrounding areas of Florida.
