Breast Lift vs. Augmentation — What’s the Difference?

If you’re ready to regain youthful firmness and fullness in your breasts, breast augmentation and the breast lift may offer the perfect solutions.

Both breast augmentation and the breast lift are popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed for women at the office of Dr. Manuel Peña, a board-certified plastic surgeon who has helped women look more beautiful and feel more confident since 1990.

Women seek breast enhancement for a variety of reasons:

  • Genetic disposition to smaller breasts
  • Genetic disposition to asymmetrical breasts
  • Reduced firmness due to aging
  • Sagging or drooping breasts following pregnancy and/or breast feeding
  • Combining Breast Lift with Implants

Breast augmentation and the breast lift enhance size and shape, improve firmness, correct imbalances, and restore youthful contour to the breasts. Both procedures are similar in preparation and recovery times. The results, however, can be quite different.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation or breast enlargement, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, changes the entire appearance of your breasts by using implants to increase breast size. Dr. Peña will thoroughly discuss the differences between saline and silicone implants, so you can make the right choice for you.

The best candidates for breast augmentation are emotionally well-adjusted, physically healthy women with realistic expectations for enhancing their figures with breast enlargement.

Breast Lift

The breast lift, also known as mastopexy, raises drooping or sagging breasts, relocating the position of the nipples and areola and reshaping contours for a more youthful appearance. The breast lift does not necessarily change breast size. An augmentation is often combined with a lift to enhance volume or fill the upper pole of the breast in a more lasting fashion.

Breast asymmetry can also be addressed with the breast lift. Asymmetry occurs when one breast is significantly different from the other in firmness, size, or position.

The breast lift can be performed on healthy patients of any age. Very young women may wish to wait until the breasts have fully developed. Women of childbearing age need not wait to have a breast lift. If you plan to become pregnant in the near future, discuss these concerns with Dr. Peña.

Better Together

Breast augmentation and the breast lift are often performed in conjunction, for fuller volume and a more lifted appearance to the breasts. During your consultation with Dr. Peña, he will advise you as to whether this combination of procedures is appropriate for you.
