Breast Reduction Questions

What are the risks of breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction does involve some risks that you should be aware of. Keep in mind, however, that the incidence of surgical or post-operative complications is extremely low. Your current health condition and your adherence to recovery instructions will have an affect on your risk level. Some of the possible negative side effects include scarring, asymmetry, numbness, bleeding, and inability to breast feed. During your initial breast reduction surgery consultation, Estero Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Peña will review all of your medical information and make sure you have a clear understanding of your risk level. Remember, also, that choosing a cosmetic surgeon with ample experience and exceptional skill plays a large part in getting positive, aesthetically pleasing results. A history of past or current smoking can have deleterious effects on wound healing of a breast reduction.

How do I know if I need a breast reduction and a breast lift?

Patients who may benefit from both a breast reduction and a breast lift have excessively large breasts coupled with sagging. If the nipples point downward, and the breast skin seems loose or stretched, a breast lift can help remove the excess tissue, re-position the nipples, and provide a more youthful shape. Breast reduction-only candidates will be happy with the location of the nipples and areolas and wish to decrease size. Most breast reductions include a breast lift.

Where incisions are made during a breast reduction?

In the majority of procedures, Dr. Peña will perform a breast reduction in which the incisions are made around the areola and extend below the breast in an anchor-shape.

Will breast reduction surgery create visible scars?

During the healing period, the incision areas will be red and swollen. Since healing times and progress varies by individual, the level of scarring will not be known for several months.* You can look at photos to help you understand where the incisions are placed and how they heal.

What happens if I have extra breast tissue in the lateral chest or armpit?

A large percentage of patients experience this problem. This is usually treated with Exilis®.
