Mommy Makeover – Restoring Your Figure and Confidence
Postpartum plastic surgery, colloquially known as a mommy makeover, is a combination of procedures that target those areas of the body most affected by pregnancy and nursing. In some instances, a mommy makeover will also include facial procedures such as face of neck lift. This varies from woman to woman and will depend on both your desires and the unique ways pregnancy has altered your body.
During your mommy makeover consultation, Naples plastic surgeon Dr. Manuel Peña will assess your areas of concern and help you determine which procedures will best help you reach your goals.
If you live in or around Naples, Florida and would like to learn what a mommy makeover can do for you, please call Peña Plastic Surgery at 239-348-7362 to schedule your initial consultation.

Procedures Included in a Mommy Makeover
The body accumulates excess fat during pregnancy. This fat is necessary for the health of your baby, but often fails to fully respond to diet and exercise after childbirth. What’s more, excess fat accumulations can stretch skin past its capacity to shrink. This often results in areas of loose and sagging skin around the midsection, buttocks, hips, and thighs. Stretch marks may also be present, depending on how far the skin was stretched during pregnancy. All of these issues can be addressed with a mommy makeover procedure.
To restore your body to it most appealing shape after pregnancy, Dr. Peña may suggest body contouring procedures including:
- Tummy tuck surgery to remove excess skin from the belly, tighten separated abdominal muscles, and reduce stubborn fat deposits around the midsection
- Liposuction to target and remove fat deposits that have resisted diet and exercise
- Thigh lift to remove drooping and uncomfortable skin and restore a smooth and tight upper leg
- Buttock surgery like the Brazilian butt lift to restore a symmetrical and well-defined derriere
Tummy tuck surgery is also used to tighten abdominal muscles that separate during pregnancy, making it a one of the most common parts of mommy makeover surgery.
Both pregnancy and nursing can have a profound impact on your breasts. To address the issues caused by fluctuating breast volume and body weight during pregnancy, Dr. Peña may recommend breast surgery options such as:
- Breast augmentation to restore volume, enhance the size and shape, and perfect the projection an profile of the breasts
- Breast lift surgery to gently lift sagging skin and correct unbecoming nipple placement
- Breast reduction to reduce, restore symmetry, and provide relief from overly large breasts
Dr. Peña may also recommend combining some of these procedures to produce ideal shape and symmetry. Common combinations include breast augmentation with lift or breast lift with reduction. All of your options will be discussed in greater detail during your visit with our board-certified Naples, Florida plastic surgeon to ensure your mommy makeover focuses on those exact parts of your body you are dissatisfied with.
Additional treatments such as facelift, neck liposuction, and blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) may be included in your mommy makeover as well. Nonsurgical options that can address skin imperfections brought about by hormonal changes may also be recommended. As with all aspects of your mommy makeover, the addition of these treatments depends entirely on your specific needs and personal desires.
How Is The Treatment Performed?
Tummy Tuck Following Pregnancy
Pregnancy can have a profound impact on your entire body – though no area is altered as much as your midsection. As babies grow, so too does a mother’s abdominal area, a process made possible by the separation of stomach muscles and the stretching of skin. At the same time, nutrients required for a healthy baby begin to accumulate in fat deposits stored in the stomach area and, while these may diminish after the birth of your child, they often stubbornly remain despite diet and exercise.
Tummy tuck surgery is used to address the largest issues resulting from pregnancy. This procedure allows separated abdominal muscles to be reattached and firmed. Tightening these muscles automatically slims the waist, allowing for more attractive curves as well.
By removing stubborn fat deposits and loose, sagging skin, tummy tuck surgery can also help reduce the prevalence of stretch marks. However, while this procedure can produce optimal contours and a slim and toned appearance, it is not able to remove stretch marks entirely.
Mommy Makeover Candidates
Are you dissatisfied with the appearance of your body after having children? Have diet and exercise failed to bring your body back to its most appealing shape? Do you have stubborn deposits of fat, excess skin, stretch marks, and other issues that make you feel less confident about your figure? If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, you may be the ideal mommy makeover candidate. The best way to learn for sure, call Dr. Peña at 239-348-7362 and schedule a private, confidential, one-on-one consultation.
To be a good candidate for mommy makeover surgery you will need to be a nonsmoker who is in generally good health. If you are a smoker, Dr. Peña will require that you quit at least six weeks prior to your procedure. Smoking interferes with the healing process and can significantly diminish results.
In addition, to be a good mommy makeover candidate you will need to be:
- Prepared for a surgical procedure
- Able to take time to rest during your recovery period
- Willing to follow pre- and post-operative instructions
- Fully aware of both the benefits and limitations of mommy makeover surgery
It is also best for women undergoing postpartum plastic surgery procedures to be satisfied with the number of children they have. Future pregnancies can impact results and necessitate additional surgeries. This and all other issues will be discussed with you in full during your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Peña.
Remember, mommy makeover is a surgical procedure that will require time to recover and you will need adult help for at least the first few days following your procedure. Even simple household tasks like cooking, cleaning, and chasing kids can be difficult for the first 72 hours, perhaps even longer, making it important that you are assisted in these things while you recover. Making a postoperative plan that provides you sufficient support and allows you time to rest and recover is part of being a good mommy makeover candidate. Dr. Pena can assist you with this if needed by providing you suggestions and covering things that you may not have considered that will, nonetheless, be a part of your recovery experience.
Mommy Makeover Recovery
Your recovery from mommy makeover surgery will be influenced by your body’s natural healing ability and how carefully you follow the pre and postoperative instructions provided by our office. It will also depend on which procedure are needed to produce the look you desire.
Some of the procedures included in a mommy makeover, such as breast augmentation, require only a short recovery period – sometimes as little as one to two days before most activities can be resumed. More involved procedures, such as tummy tuck surgery, may require up to a week of rest, followed by physical restrictions that will need to be adhered to until you have healed. This can make it difficult to determine exactly how long your recovery will take.
Genially speaking, most women are able to resume a good portion of their activities – work, social, and familial – within five to seven days. More significant physical exertion may need to be avoided for up to six weeks and it could be eight to ten weeks before bruising and swelling completely subside.* During this time, it is important that you take proper care of your incisions and your body to help ensure the most pleasing results.
Maintaining Mommy Makeover Results
The easiest way to maintain your mommy makeover results is by choosing a healthy lifestyle. What you eat and how much you exercise will impact your results directly, and will need to be considered and modified if you’d like to maintain a slimmer and more defined figure.
A healthy diet is often comprised primarily of vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. However, as every body is different, it can be very useful to work with a qualified and experienced nutritionist to develop a diet that is beneficial for you. The same is true of exercise. While it is recommended that you get at least three hours of aerobic exercise and seven to ten hours of mild to moderate exercise every week, your body may have different needs.* Working with a personal trainer can help you find an exercise regimen that is not only ideally suited to your body, but ideally suited for your temperament as well.
Procedures included in a mommy makeover, such as liposuction, can continue producing results for years to come, but only if you help.* Once removed, fat cannot “grow back,” but new fat can fill in where the old deposits resided. Effort will be needed to prevent this. How much effort is dependent on your anatomy and physical needs. We can discuss this in greater detail during your body contouring consultation at our Naples, FL office.
